Shells have been an aesthetic part of human culture since time began. Stone Age people used them in jewellery and as decoration for their boats and homes. In some tropical countries shells were used as a trading currency, and in some places still are.

In fact, shell is the earliest ever recorded evidence of personal adornment; in a Swaziland mine in sub-Saharan Africa, the cradle of mankind, excavators found the skeleton of a child buried at least 50,000 years ago, together with a perforated sea shell pendant. And all these years later, we are still dreaming up new ideas for shell jewellery.
